Brave New World

Brave New World

Brave New World is a dystopian novel about a society that has completely given up on the idea of family, and instead uses scientific methods to breed children in test tubes. The population is controlled and conditioned through mass entertainment, the drug Soma, and psychological manipulation. The novel anticipates huge scientific advances in reproductive technology, sleep-learning, psychological manipulation, and classical conditioning that are combined to combine to change society. The World State, which has achieved peace through materialism, established an artificial social standard by which all humans are conditioned from birth to be content with their lives.

The story takes place in London where the main character Bernard Marx does not fit in with his fellow citizens. After Bernard embarrasses himself at a social outing with the upper-class citizens, he travels to a part of the world called 'The Savage Reservation' where the natives have been allowed to live without being interfered with by the government. There Bernard meets a natural born human, John, and his mother Linda formerly a resident of London. The encounter changes the course of history.
