Written around 409 B.C., Oedipus at Colonus is a play written by Greek Tragedian Sophocles. The play was written shortly before Sophocles died and was the final of the three Theban plays. Set between Oedipus Rex and Antigone, the tragedy takes place in the ancient town of Colonus, located just outside Athens.

This play focuses on the life of Oedipus, former king of Thebes, and explains his mythic significance for Athens. Blinded, banished, and disgraced, Oedipus lives life in exile from Thebes. After years of lonely wandering, Oedipus finally finds a sacred olive grove at Colonus to live out his remaining days. When Oedipus first arrives at the Olive Grove he is blind beggar tormented by guilt, however as Oedipus nears his death he becomes a powerful figure capable of issuing or withholding blessings.
